Here in PA the rules are you have to go to a gun store and do a title transfer. Runs about $30. But your state could be differentHow to change names on a handgun registration...?
First go get all your paperwork done and in order so that you can legally own a handgun, then re-register it in your name. Shouldn't take too long, probably a month or 2. You can do it all at your local Police Dept. That is if you need any special permits and whatnots. Otherwise just go re-register it.
Where do you live that it is registered and have to be 21 to own a handgun? That would help. I live in a free state. I have two handguns that I purchased over the years to give to my oldest son. When he turns 18 in 6 months, all I have to do it hand them to him and say ';enjoy';. If I m lazy, I guess I can just tell him '; You know those two handguns in the gun safe in your room that I have been promising to give to you? Well they are yours now.'; No paperwork required.
chances are your state doesn't ';register'; handguns. I think that there are only 6 states that require ';registration'; of firearms.
I lived in a state that did. The local Sheriff could file transfer papers and move the registration from one person to the other... and send that data along to the state.
The all important question is what state do you live in? Every state will have different rules.
For instance, in my state, there is no gun registration. And gifting a firearm to a son or daughter can be done with no paperwork at all.
