I have a PC which boots one of two XP Home and Work. How do I change the names of these in the startup menu?

I need to use a multi- boot system as my work setup has some company defined applications which get in the way when I'm out of the office. I want to change the names of the two start-up options given by the DOS after re-boot. Currently both options have the same menu label.I have a PC which boots one of two XP Home and Work. You will need to go to your C:\ drive, ensure that in Tools%26gt;Files you have got Operating System Hidden files visible. Then, make a backup disk, /rescue disk, save the boot files to this disk 'just in case'

The file you need to edit is called ';Boot.ini'; and is on the root of the drive, C:\.

Some of the text in the sample below has not come out properly.

Look at the link (below) Look at this sample:

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiti?

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

\WINDOWS=';Microsoft Windows XP Professional in Partition 1'; /fastdetect

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)

\WINDOWS=';Microsoft Windows XP Professional in Partition 2'; /fastdetect

The text in Quotes ';Microsoft Windows XP Professional in Partition 1'; is the text you need to edit.

Be very careful, open the file in ';Notepad';, and immediatly ';Save As'; 'Boot.ini.org' (original) Then, re-open Boot .ini, edit the text in the quotes to suit yourself, then save the edited file.

Re-boot, and if you have got your re-labelling crossed over, simply amend as you did before.I have a PC which boots one of two XP Home and Work. How do I change the names of these in the startup menu?
This is pretty dangerous, so be careful:

Start %26gt;%26gt; Run, type ';msconfig'; (without ';';).. goto Boot.INI. Find the two OSes

Have a look at which partition etc is which. Find the label - should probably say something like;

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(numbe?of parition)WINDOWS=';Windows XP Pro'; etc etc

You need to change the bit in the '; '; to suit your needs

Yet again, be careful.
