Changing names of photo files?

I recently upgraded to XP Professional.And it will not let me change the name of a photo file without changing the properties of the file.It gives e a warning before doing so.This has also occured when I try to change names of other files as well.How do I disable this

Lots could be going on.



First: with XP (I have it too) it warns you a file may become unusable. Notice the .JPG or .BMP or whatever format the photo is in. When changing the name you MUST retain the .XXX or the file will become unusable. You probably CAN change the file name, just be sure you don't loose the operating file designator (.XXX) No, don't use ';.XXX';, it's meant to represent whatever file you have.



Second: Another way to change the name is to open the file then ';save as'; with the new name you want to give it. You will end up with TWO files of the same picture with different names, but you can always delete the one you don't want later.



Are you aware that you can change a file name without opening it? I bet you are. Single Click the file, pause about two seconds then Single Click it again. Only the name should appear and the operating program (.XXX). You can select which portion of the name you want to change by dragging the mouse through that portion of the file, highlighting it, and then give it a new name.



TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE:

make backup copies of your files before you mess with their names. This way if you accidentally mess something up, you can still retrieve your photos with out loosing them forever.

the easiest way to change photo names is with a free program called picasa. It sill locate the photos and let you rename them on the fly.
Make sure the files you are renaming are not read-only. If they are windows is set to warn you when you try to rename them. This is a protective measure so you dont accidentally rename or delete inportant files. Select all the files and click properties and if the Read-only has a check or filled box, then click it and click okay or apply and this will set all the file to not- read only and you can then rename them.
